A WHEEL ROLLS INTO A BAR.

The door smashed against the wall as the wheel rolled in. Everyone in the bar looked around to watch as it continued to the centre of the room and fell into series of rotations on its side.

The only sound was the steel scratching the wooden floor as it circled endlessly. Science at work. It was like a vortex sucking all the attention, all the conversation, all the meaning from the room.

The audience were similarly enthralled, and applauded wildly when the wheel finally stopped. They had never seen this happen during Annie Get Your Gun before. Never, in all the years the Luxville Usher eXchange had put it on.

However they were shocked into silence when lead actor Pauline Preston leapt over the bar and ran off stage yelling “We’re gettin’ out of Dodge folks!” They knew that wasn’t in the script.

Next day the hall was quiet. The wheel lay still in the middle of the stage. At the same time a red ute was speeding down the highway towards the capital. Pauline was driving, Eugene Kelly was by her side, and their dogs Pip and Sally were on the tray, straining forward tongues lolling. Pauline and Eugene were laughing hysterically. They had a pact. The first one who grew tired of Luxville just had to spin the wheel.
